Welcome to American Giving Project / Toys Of Hope Love to Give, Give to Love
To adopt a family for the holidays, please send in your form before January 15th
The American Giving Project / Toys of Hope Adopt-A-Family program was set up to assist especially needy families. Donors can help in one of two ways.
First, you can sponsor a family by donating from $100 to $2500, depending on the family size.
Second, American Giving Project / Toys of Hope can provide you with a list of items requested by the family. You then purchase the items and American Giving Project / Toys of Hope will deliver them to the family.
Whichever way you choose to help, you will receive a description of the family and their circumstances. American Giving Project / Toys of Hope keeps the identity of the families confidential due to the sensitive nature of their individual situations. However, with the family’s permission, a photo may be provided to the sponsor. In addition, sponsors who wish to remain anonymous may do so.
Families chosen for the Adopt-A-Family program are living in homeless shelters or have been referred to American Giving Project / Toys of Hope by county social service agencies, schools, hospitals, fire departments, religious institutions and other service organizations. Members of these families often suffer from illness or disabilities that prevent them from working.
With your help, we can provide essentials for the home and all family members. This will, in turn, create a happier, more fulfilling and self-sufficient life for needy children and their families.
You can participate in the Adopt-A-Family program during the holiday season or year round. Just fill out the quick and simple form to the right, fax it to us, and we will contact you. OR If you would like to Adopt a Family for a one time donation between $100 to $2,500, please donate online below.
Note - fax is out of order.

Poor Paws is a program that was started after we realized that many low income families struggle to feed and care for their pets. Sometimes, they face the difficult choice of feeding themselves or their pets. American Giving Project / Toys of Hope helps these families by providing them with donated pet food and pet supplies.
The goal of the program is not only to help the animals, but also to allow disadvantaged children and families to enjoy the companionship that their pets provide.
See the gallery below of photos from Poor Paws events.

When Melissa Doktofsky created the American Giving Project / Toys of Hope charity, her focus was to continue in a tradition her parents taught her of helping the less fortunate. As a young child, she looked forward to getting her allowance to put in the little blue “pushka” tzedakah box in her home.
The early focus of the charity was to give anonymously to minimize the embarrassment to the recipient family. Melissa felt it would be nice for the children to think that their parent or guardian provided for them. Her favorite delivery is still the “anonymous drop” at people’s doorsteps. Melissa still feels that it is not important for the families to know where the donations come from, but just that it is meant to help them to improve their lives and the lives of their children. This philosophy is still a major concept of our charity.
However, with all the news articles, television coverage of the charity and celebrity involvement, American Giving Project / Toys of Hope has become one of New York’s favorite charities. For over 14 years, American Giving Project / Toys of Hope remains an all volunteer charity and still uses 100% of all donations to help needy children, their families and their pets. The Toys of Hope team feels very honored to have received numerous awards from the Board of Education, local government, the state of NY, the prestigious Martin Luther King Award, the mayor’s of Philadelphia and New Orleans for support to victims of the Hurricane Katrina and especially an award from the Governor of New York.
This program focuses on providing items to needy and homeless children and their families that can help them to become more self sufficient.
A donation of $18 buys one person–shampoo, soap, hygiene items, a toothbrush for one month. We buy the brands they like at a major discount. $36 for two people, etc.
I will donate $___________ to American Giving Project / Toys of Hope for supplies for ______many children.
I would like to donate $__________in addition, for new clothing for parents to go to job interviews, children to wear to school etc.
There are many reasons to make a donation.
You may wish to honor a loved one for a special event, donate in someone’s memory, show your appreciation or thank someone.
Toy of Hope will send an acknowledgement with our custom made beautiful tzedakah program cards to you and the person or place you wish to honor or memorialize.

American Giving Project / Toys of Hope’s dental program provides children with dental supplies such as toothpaste, toothbrushes and dental floss. The goal of our dental program is to teach children proper oral hygiene to help them preserve a beautiful, healthy smile for life.
Using a specially designed horse puppet, children are taught proper brushing and flossing techniques. The children range in age from three to ten years old. Each child gets a chance to practice what they have learned on the puppet with a giant toothbrush. This fun presentation not only reinforces good dental hygiene habits, but also leads the children to develop the ability to care for themselves.
We rely on local dentists and businesses to provide free dental supplies to distribute to the children. Each child takes home a bag with toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss for themselves and their parents.

The Chance 2 Dance Program inspired by our board member Jordy Castillo. The mission is to reach out and teach children the art of dance. Our focus is to serve those who can not afford lessons at a dance studio. Children who simply want the Chance 2 Dance. Jordy felt after being a member of American Giving Project / Toys of Hope for so many years, that he should use his talent and share it with everyone. This has created an outlet where kids can express who they are in a positive and up lifting matter using the art of dance. Children are able to get one on one lessons. They learn how to dance and get a better understanding of how to keep their bodies healthy and fit. With dance being a major craze around the world we want kids to join the fun and be active. We want to take what we know and give that knowledge to our youth. So what are you waiting for?
Jordy Castillo is a 19 year old dancer from Greenlawn, New York. He has been dancing for 15 years and has been dancing competitively over a decade. Some accomplishments that Jordy has achieved are Sr. Title winner at Beyond The Stars Dance Competition, many Choreographer awards, and multiple High Score Awards.
Jordy has had the opportunity to work with big names in the business such as Bill Bell, Emily Shock, and William Wingfield. Jordy attended the Dance Teacher Summit in NYC where he networked and learned additional techniques used by all the successful teachers worldwide. He uses what he learned while teaching an all boys class at one of his current studios, Kings Park Dance Center. As a student in college, Jordy is excited to continue his dance studies and plans on doing bigger and better things with what he has learned. Jordy is proud to run the Chance 2 Dance Program and continue supporting all the programs of the American Giving Project / Toys of Hope Children’s Charity.

A trip to a petting zoo
American Giving Project / Toys of Hope’s unique program, “Out for a Day,” provides a day of fun and recreation for children and their families. Some of the places and events that families have been treated to include: baseball games at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium; Off-Broadway shows; the circus at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum; local museums and historical sites; the Bronx Zoo; comedy shows; arcades; the Long Island Game Farm; aquariums; college sporting events; and a trip to see the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.
The cost of a day at a ballpark or movie theater can be prohibitively expensive for a family that is struggling to pay their monthly bills. This program provides the whole family a memorable experience that they can treasure. The parents and their children have a chance to enjoy being together without the stress of having to use money from their household expenses.
American Giving Project / Toys of Hope pays for admission tickets, snacks and souvenirs.
American Giving Project / Toys of Hope has treated families as small as three, and groups of up to fifty children and adults, to the “Out for a Day” program.
